What is Attachment and why does it matter?

Attachment is our deep need to feel safe, connected, and important to the people we love. From our earliest relationships, we learn whether others will be there for us, whether we can depend on them, and whether it’s safe to reach for connection when we’re hurting.

These patterns don’t disappear as we grow up. They shape how we love, communicate, respond to conflict, and protect ourselves when we feel hurt or afraid.

In our closest relationships, attachment is often underneath what we see on the surface. The argument may be about dishes, sex, money, or communication—but underneath, there may be much deeper questions:

“Are you there for me? Do I matter to you? Can I count on you when I need you?”

When those needs feel uncertain, we can fall into painful patterns of pursuing, withdrawing, criticizing, defending, or shutting down. EFT therapy helps couples recognize these patterns and create a more secure, connected relationship—one where both partners can feel seen, valued, and safe enough to reach for each other.
